How to take care of your braces on vacation

For many people, vacation means freedom from responsibility. For you, however—someone who has braces—it means taking extra precautions to ensure that all the hard work that you and your Newton orthodontics team put forth does not go to waste. Have fun on vacation, but don’t forget to show your teeth a little TLC while you do. This blog details just a few ways you can care for your smile while away from home.

Pack the Essentials

Caring for your teeth while away from home begins before you even leave the house. When you’re packing your toiletries, don’t forget to pack the following items:

  • Floss, for getting beneath the wires and between the brackets
  • A toothbrush, for scrubbing away food debris
  • Mouthwash, for clearing away all that debris your toothbrush couldn’t get
  • Wax, to prevent your wires from poking your mouth

You should also consider researching orthodontists in the area, just in case a bracket comes loose or a wire breaks. At the very least, have the number to your children’s orthodontist in Newton on speed dial, just in case you have any questions or concerns regarding yours or your little one’s braces.

Avoid the Same Foods You’d Avoid At Home

Just because you’re on vacation doesn’t mean that you get to break all the rules. If you hope to keep your braces intact and working, you still need to be cautious about what you eat. Here is a list of foods to avoid while away from home:

  • Whole fruits
  • Corn on the cob
  • Anything sticky
  • Foods that are hard, such as nuts, cookies and hard candies

Having braces doesn’t mean that you can’t still have fun while on vacation. By caring for your teeth in the same way as you would when at home, you can prevent mishaps and ensure that your vacay is full of nothing but smiles, laughter and good times.
