We at Carvalho & Roth Orthodontics wish you a Happy New Year! We understand that one of the most exciting things of a new year is getting to make resolutions to better yourself. Well, as your orthodontist and orthodontic team in Marlborough, Northborough, and Newton Centre, we’d like to suggest making a few orthodontic resolutions to better your oral health as well. To help those with braces out, we’re providing you with five great orthodontic resolutions that you can make for 2018. Just try not to break them too soon!
Optimize Your Brushing
The absolute cornerstone of your oral health is a committed, proper brushing routine. If you want to make sure that your orthodontic treatment is a success in 2018, the first recommendation we have for you is to make sure that your brushing is as effective as possible. To accomplish this, allow us to make a few suggestions to improve your brushing:
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
When you brush, do it at a 45-degree angle so that you can get under the gum line.
Also, make sure to brush gently using small, circular motions.
Don’t forget to brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth.
Brush your teeth four times every day for at least two minutes each time.
Use a Water Pick
With braces, flossing can be very difficult. We understand. However, flossing is a critical part of maintaining an optimal level of oral hygiene and not something that you’d want to skip over. Thankfully, there’s an easier way to do this rather than trying to maneuver dental floss around your archwire – using a water pick. A water pick shoots a stream of water at your teeth that will dislodge any food particles that are stuck between them. It’s a terrific substitute for flossing that we recommend doing once every day.
Rinse with Mouthwash as Well
Another useful addition to your daily oral hygiene regimen is rinsing with mouthwash. A fluoride rinse will be capable of strengthening your tooth enamel and keeping your teeth free of cavities. It’s simple to add to your oral hygiene routine – just swish about two teaspoons of it around in your mouth for a minute after you brush.
Minimize Your Sugar Intake
We understand that no one really wants to stop eating delicious, sugary foods! However, sugar can be very detrimental toward your dental health as it’ll interact with the bacteria in your mouth to create acids that will cause cavities. While we wouldn’t expect anyone to completely cut out sugar from their diet, limiting your consumption of sugary foods will benefit both your oral health and your overall well-being.
Keep up with Your Visits to the Orthodontist
Our last orthodontic resolution that we want to suggest for you is to keep up with all of your regularly scheduled appointments to your Newton Centre, Marlborough, and Northborough orthodontist. These visits to your orthodontist will help ensure that there aren’t any complications with your orthodontic treatment and that it’s progressing just as planned. This will allow your treatment to finish on-schedule
