Brushing with Braces

Brushing with braces. Brushing is the cornerstone of a successful oral hygiene regimen, and it's even more critical when wearing braces. During treatment, you should brush your teeth a minimum of four times per day: once after breakfast, once after lunch, once after dinner, and once before bed. Using a fluoridated toothpaste, you should thoroughly brush every tooth surface and around wires and brackets for a total of at least two minutes for each brushing. Take care to be thorough when brushing around braces, as food can easily get trapped under brackets and wires.

Special Brushing Tools

Interdental toothbrush. In addition to a regular toothbrush, you'll likely want to use an interdental toothbrush to keep your teeth clean. This is a small, pine-tree shaped brush that looks something like a pipe cleaner and is designed to easily clean under archwires and around brackets. It's small enough to carry with you anywhere, making it perfect for cleaning between brushings.

In addition to an interdental brush, you may also want to use an oral irrigator, or "water pick." This is a device that shoots a small, pressurized jet of water at and between the teeth, helping to dislodge bits of food that get stuck in teeth and braces. While it's no substitute for dental floss, it can be a helpful supplement to your regular oral hygiene regimen.

Flossing with Braces

Floss threader.Flossing at least once daily is crucial to the health of your teeth and gums. To floss with braces, you'll need to use a floss threader: a reusable, looped piece of plastic with one long, pointed end. To use it, simply thread the floss through the "eye" of the loop, then use the pointed end to pull the threader and the floss underneath your archwire. Pull it through until the floss is underneath the wire, then floss your teeth normally. Repeat this for each gap between the teeth, and you're good to go!
